Air Travel

Oberammergau is slightly closer to Innsbruck Airport in neighbouring Austria but many visitors will prefer Munich Airport for the ease of motorway access.

Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck Airport is the closest to the village of Oberammergau. Innsbruck has long been known as a popular destination for ski charter flights - especially from the northern European countries - but now the introduction of new lower-fare scheduled flights from major destinations like London has made it into a real option for those flying from further afield.

The principal route climbs the Zirlerberg to the resort of Seefeld and then cuts through Scharnitz and Mittenwald at the German border before bypassing Garmisch and heading out in the direction of the motorway to Munich. Unfortunately this route can be closed by avalanche danger in heavy snow and a detour around via Kufstein is the only other option. The car journey would normally take around one-and-a-half hours from Innsbruck Airport to Oberammergau.

Munich Airport

Most visitors who are using scheduled flights will still probably arrive at Munich Airport, as it is the major international gateway for this part of Europe.

The expanding airport is located a good 30 minutes to the north-east of the city and drivers should stay on the motorway until signs are reached for Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Motorists should ignore the confusing signs for Innsbruck which direct traffic via Kufstein. The journey should take around one-and-a-half to two hours but the motorway can be very busy on a peak season Saturday. The junction for Oberammergau is reached shortly after the end of the motorway at Eschenlohe.

Salzburg Airport

Salzburg Airport, with a mix of ski charters and cheap scheduled flights, is a possible option for visitors to Oberammergau. The resort can be reached by taking the motorway in the direction of Munich and then cutting around the city ring road on the south to the motorway in the direction of Garmisch. The drive would normally take around two hours.

Rail Travel

Oberammergau Railway Station

Oberammergau railway station is located on the other side of the river from the centre of the village and is reached via the regional service from the southern German village of Murnau.

Trains take approximately two-and-a-half hours from Munich Airport. Take the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich Pasing and then change onto a regional service to Murnau and at Murnau make a further change to Oberammergau railway station.

The train journey from the main Innsbruck station also involves two changes (at Garmisch and Murnau) and a two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hour journey.
