Innsbruck Airport is located to the west of the city near the motorway network and near the banks of the River Inn.
The airport has mountains to the north and south and the flight approach is made along the Inn valley. Pilots have to have a specialised qualification to land at Innsbruck Airport - this can lead to delays in itself in the winter as suitable pilots go "out of hours".
Despite the mountain surroundings, winter flying conditions at Innsbruck Airport are often as good or better than its larger competitors and the main advantage is the proximity of the airport to many top ski resorts.
For skiers flying in to visit German ski resorts, the area around Garmisch is closest to Innsbruck and virtually all other resorts listed on Ski Germany can be reached with relative ease from the airport.
Car drivers will find the airport just outside the city centre in the direction of Telfs. It is easily reached on the motorway from Kufstein, Vorarlberg or Italy - follow the signs for the Innsbruck West turn-off. The airport grounds are immediately visible at the next junction after the exit.
Weekends can be very busy in the winter and Innsbruck Airport has a full schedule of charter and scheduled flights, many of the charters flying to and from the UK.
Sufficient time should be left to check-in at the airport. The shopping at the airport is restricted to last-minute purchases. There is a duty-free section in the departures lounge.
Non-drivers can reach the airport via train and bus. There is a regular bus service from the airport to the main railway station in the centre of Innsbruck which runs late into the evening.
The airport closes at night and flights delayed past a certain point in the late evening will be diverted to larger airports.
There is a busy hotel near the airport and many guesthouses and other hotels in the area of the airport and on the way to the centre of Innsbruck.
Airport taxis are available from outside the arrivals lounge - a list of agreed prices to usual destinations is displayed in the airport terminal building.
Car hire is available at Innsbruck Airport - the rental desks of the major companies are located in the covered parking opposite the terminals. They are manned at peak times, at other times the services are available via a courtesy phone.
Our travel fulfilment partners Booking.com have a good selection of hotels near the airport for those who are looking to overnight at the beginning or end of their stay.
