Main skiing area reached by bus, car or on foot.
The Nebelhorn ski area base station is located near the centre of Oberstdorf near the ice stadium. For many visitors, the easiest way to reach it will be via the regular ski bus service between the train station and cable car.
There is however adequate car parking near the cable car buildings to cater for visitors to the ice stadium and the ski jumping competitions.
Skiers who are visiting the resort for a longer period may find this area an interesting change from the larger Fellhorn and Kleinwalsertal ski area.
The journey from the bottom to the top of the area is made in three cable cars. Since the runs from the top of either black or red, some may prefer to leave the cable cars at the intermediate stations in order to warm up on some easier runs.
Exiting the cable car at the Höfatsblick (second station) gives a good view of the open bowl above the tree line and allows skiers to view the runs above them before taking the cable car all the way to the top.
In good conditions, paragliders take advantage of the summit cable car and in fresh snow the steep slopes on the left of the bowl can be a great high mountain experience with some fabulous views.
In less than perfect weather, or for those feeling more timid, the red run to the right looking up provides a more secure option and joins the main run down from the Koblat chairlift to the station at the base of the bowl.
A further chairlift lies just under the bowl and provides some short intermediate runs without the necessity to take the run along the valley all the way to the first cable car station.
Those that wish to do so will find a relatively comfortable intermediate run which narrows in some places and can have bottlenecks in busy periods.
The area around the first cable car station has some beginner lifts and an easy drag lift and is perfect for those who are still at an early stage of skiing but who wish to gain some altitude.
The red run to the base station takes a winding route through the trees and should be avoided when snow conditions are bad.
Lengthy queues can develop for this area near the town, but the reward is a convenient high bowl with good snow conditions and a good range of intermediate level runs.
