Nestled at the northern end of the Königssee, Schönau has a perfect position for both scenery and winter sports.
The village boasts the famous bobsleigh run on the shores of the lake, the ski-touring in the neighbouring National Park, and the closest access in the region to the Jenner ski area.
The hotels and other accommodation are either located in the lakeside area near the cable car, in the village centre about 1 kilometre away, or in the hamlets of the surrounding countryside.
The Königssee is one of the best-known of Bavaria's mountain lakes, both for its beauty and its cleanliness, although it is nowhere near as big as the largest lake in the state, the Chiemsee.

The most convenient airport is Salzburg Airport which is only 20km away from the village. Munich airport is just under 200km in distance. Car hire is available at both airports.
Most of the hotels in Schönau - literally "beautiful meadow" - are either clustered at the end of the Königssee lake and around the Jenner cablecar station or located a kilometre away in the central part of the town near the tourist office and town hall. Some are located outside the town in the surrounding countryside.
